After you return home from the surgery, some soreness will appear. It is most intense for 24 to 48 hours following surgery, at which point it should begin to fade. How long it ultimately lasts will vary, but pain medication is often prescribed to deal with it. You will be required to wear gauze bandages for a few days, but at the end of that period a surgical bra will be given to you by your doctor. Bruising will appear, and some women experience a slight burning sensation on their nipples. This is completely normal and will disappear after about two weeks. Stitches will remain for about ten days, and bruising lasts about 3 to 5 weeks.
After a few days, depending on your doctor’s orders, you should be able to return to work. You will also be able to exercise and function normally with a week or two. However, your doctor will also make the final call. Physical contact is discouraged for 2 to 3 weeks. After that point, you will be able to decide what contact is made based on the soreness you feel. Scars remain pink and firm for up to 6 weeks and for several months might not go down in size. They never completely disappear, but they will begin to fade.
